United States – Canada Province statement in support of the Cuban people

July 19, 2021

The Society of the Sacred Heart, United States – Canada Province, wholeheartedly supports the July 13 statement from the Cuba Conference of Religious, who have affirmed the right of Cubans to express their desire for a better life through peaceful protests. Our hearts go out to the people of Cuba, including our religious there, who are struggling for the basic necessities of life in the midst of a continuing surge of COVID-19 deaths. In the words of Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami, they are “starving for bread” and “starving for freedom.” Along with Bishop Nicholas DeMarzio of Brooklyn, we hope “that our fellow citizens of the world may come to know a better life, and that justice and safety prevail in the days ahead.” We support a call for dialogue and listening, and for all parties to avoid violence.
