Statement concerning the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on DACA: June 18, 2020

June 18, 2020

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients are thriving in the United States. They contribute to our society by working to support their families, by taking advantage of educational opportunities and by serving in the military. Approximately 62,000 health care workers in the United States, on the front lines of a global pandemic, are DACA-eligible.

Brought to the United States as children, in some cases with little or no knowledge or ties to their countries of origin, we firmly believe that DACA-eligible residents of the United States should be given the opportunity to stay. We applaud today’s Supreme Court decision to uphold DACA. The Society of the Sacred Heart in the United States and Canada stands in solidarity with all migrants and refugees who are seeking a better life for themselves and their children. We appreciate the richness and diversity they bring to our cultures and the contributions they make to our societies and nations.

We continue to advocate for a permanent solution and call on members of Congress in the United States to:

  • Support the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019 (H.R. 6), which provides a pathway to citizenship for those who were brought to the United States as children by their parents (“Dreamers”), Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders
  • Support the Healthcare Workforce Resilience Act (S. 3599), which provides a pathway to permanent residency for certain healthcare workers
  • Enact comprehensive immigration reform that includes family reunification, a path to earned legalization, worker protections and a humane border policy.
